Welcome back, my friends! In our previous blog post, we explored the charms of Lisbon and Sintra in Portugal. Now, our journey continues as we set our sights on Porto and the Douro Valley. Are you ready to cross time and space with me and experience the fusion of ancient and modern?
Porto: A Romantic and Mysterious Encounter
In the morning, I arrived in Porto, Portugal’s second-largest city, after a flight. Known as the birthplace of the world-famous Port wine, Porto is a captivating blend of old town charm and vibrant modernity. I checked into the spacious and comfortable Infante Sagres Hotel, a tranquil haven in this bustling city.
Historical Architecture as World Heritage
My first stop was the historic Lello Bookstore, famous for its breathtaking interior. It was truly a sight to behold, and what moved me even more was the fact that this place served as the inspiration for J.K. Rowling, the author of “Harry Potter.” Afterwards, I strolled along the banks of the Douro River, taking a traditional Rabelo boat tour to admire the wine cellars and ancient bridges on the opposite side.
Culinary Delights in Porto
Porto offers a culinary experience not to be missed. I tried the Francesinha, a Porto specialty sandwich that combines various meats and cheeses, topped with a generous layer of tomato and beer sauce. It was absolutely delicious!
Douro Valley: Intoxicated by the Aroma of Wine
The next morning, I embarked on a drive to the Douro Valley, a sprawling vineyard region and the birthplace of Port wine. I made a stop at Quinta da Pacheca, a wine estate that offers a panoramic view of the Douro Valley.
Exploring the Vineyards
At the estate, I had the opportunity to participate in a winemaking experience. I put on special leather boots and stepped into the cool wine as I learned about the winemaking process. Finally, under the sunshine, I savored a glass of Port wine produced by the estate. Its smooth texture and rich flavor allowed me to taste the weight of history.
As I continue to appreciate the beauty and cuisine of Portugal, I eagerly look forward to sharing more travel experiences with all of you.
